Materials

We offer a wide range of material depending on the needs of the application.  When working with our application engineers, we will select the material type (and heat treatment method) to ensure the bearings meet the requirements of the application.  This includes factors such as high wear resistance, heavy shock loads, extreme corrosion, as well as dimensional stability.

Chrome steel 100 Cr6 is the standard steel type used in our Performance Bearings. The 100 Cr6 rings have a hardness of 60 to 64 HRC while the balls will have a hardness of 62 to 65 HRC after heat-treatment.

Stainless steel is used extensively at WIB, particularly for the manufacturing of ultra-light (618xx and 619xx) and custom bearings.

For extremely corrosive environments, such us saltwater applications, we have a proprietary combination of steel and heat treatment that further increases the corrosive resistance properties of the bearing beyond what is readily available in the market.

As a leading manufacturer of hybrid bearing technology, use various means to obtain the optimal design including the exclusive or mixed use of 100 Cr6 steel, stainless steel and ceramic. The ceramic balls have a hardness of approximately 80 HRC. Ceramic bearings offer increased wear and corrosion resistance and allow for higher speeds while reducing bearing noise. With reduced thermal expansion, ceramic bearings offer greater internal clearance stability service life. Ceramic balls also provide better thermal and electrical insulation to avoid fluting.

The 100 Cr6 steel rings produced by WIB are heat stabilized by annealing after hardening and can be used to temperatures up to 150°C. Should the application require the bearing to operate at higher temperatures, we would recommend heat stabilizing the bearing, using Viton seals and special grease to avoid early degradation.
