When Thömus set out to develop their new competition bike, they knew that upgrading the ball bearings was essential for achieving peak performance. Turning to WIB, a renowned Swiss company specializing in high-performance bearings, was an easy choice. The collaboration between Thömus and WIB has resulted in a groundbreaking partnership characterized by innovation and exceptional performance.
Why WIB?
Based in the canton of Fribourg, we have been a stalwart in the bearing industry for over 60 years. Our expertise in producing customized, high-performance Swiss-made bearings has earned us a stellar reputation across various advanced sectors, including cycling.

Initial problem and analysis
Our engineers carried out an in-depth technical analysis and identified several design flaws in the bearings previously used. Although they were already highly efficient, elements such as sealing, rust resistance and mechanical strength were limiting them. It was critical to address this to further improve the longevity and performance of the bikes.
WIB’s customized solution
To tackle the rust issue, we selected a special stainless steel alloy renowned for its high strength and durability, significantly extending the bearings’ service life. This robust material also enhanced the bearings’ mechanical strength.
Our engineers then reimagined the bearing construction to increase the Hertzian contact interface between the balls and the rings. This along with a custom radial and axial internal clearance allowed for a more uniform distribution of loads, thereby extending the bearing’s lifespan by reducing wear and tear.
To ensure superior protection against water and contaminants, we collaborated with our seal supplier to develop custom seals. These hermetic seals adapt their protection level according to the pressure exerted, guaranteeing optimal sealing even under high-pressure water jets.
Additionally, we selected a special high-performance, hydrophobic grease to further enhance the bearings’ performance and properties. This grease not only provides superior water resistance but also ensures optimal lubrication under high-load conditions.
